Been looking at purchasing the Drivesmart Pro as the Alpha with the Radar and Laser seems impossible to find in stock, but can anyone tell me why this GPS based only device is worth paying £100 for over using a free phone app such as Waze or TomTom Amigo for speed cameras? What benefits does it have? As the reviews on Amazon are so so and say the database takes ages to be updated with new cameras..
Thanks.
Hi there,
The difference is that these units are created primarily for Speed Camera detection - unlike the Waze and Tom Tom apps which are primarily for route planning.
So these units will warn you of speed cameras and possible mobile camera areas without needing to program in your route every time.
Those apps are great for what they do, but some people prefer a standalone unit which can sit on the dashboard and offer voice alerts without the need to constantly put in your destination address every time you go out on the road to get an alert.
The database updates are free and updated roughly 2 - 3 times per month by the manufacturer based on user reports and new data over the month. To upload this to the unit is a simple process via a PC.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards

I think I am going to order a pro off Amazon if I can't get an Alpha, Do you know anywhere I can get hold of a Drivesmart Alpha I'd rather spend a few quid extra and have the radar and laser detector than just a GPS based one if I can?
Also how do we know when the database has been updated does it say on the website when the database was last updated?
Hi,
We are currently awaiting new stock of the Alpha - events this year have played absolute havoc with suppliers and delivery dates. As well as more original Alpha units arriving within the next month, we are also expecting delivery of the 'Alpha X' - a new generation of the Alpha.
We have a refurbished Alpha remaining in stock if you wish to call us directly (01483 522 225) we can process your order for that.
Kind regards
